Aloha! I’m Joda,  “Dr. D the RD,” with 25+ years of  diverse experience with individuals aged 3 to 93, from those facing eviction to world-class athletes. My motto is “Get well. Get fit. Get happy.”

My philosophy is simple. You have the goodness, strength and innate abilities to be successful within you – I facilitate your transformation to your brightest self.  We begin by clarifying of your priorities, goals, and by developing an effective action plan.  Next, I’m your accountability partner who assists you in monitoring your progress, empowers you to overcome obstacles during your travels, and encourages climbing to new heights of accomplishment.  Along your journey we’ll refine the skills needed maintain your success, so by the end of our time together you are living more abundantly and, if you want to, more confidently achieving in your life purpose.

    • Accomplished author: 14 peer-reviewed professional journal articles; numerous lay articles; experienced in radio, TV, print and internet.
    • Competitive triathlete: Ironman Championships -1985; 1st female in Tinman in 1985 and 1986, and many other races up through my 50’s (1984-2014).
    • Happily married for 25+ years, “born in Hawaii” local girl; and proud momma of 2 college-educated girls.

Diverse Professional Experience

Castle Medical Center, Hawaii Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Bariatric Dietitian overseeing medical nutrition therapy, weight loss counseling and a monthly support group.
                                             1989- Derrickson Enterprises. Wellness, fitness and nutrition coaching with expertise in triathlon coaching, program evaluation and weight loss. Previously contracted by Full Plate, Inc., the Salvation Army, America’s Second Harvest, Windward United Church of Christ, U.W.- IRP, & U.H Wahine Athletic Dept., and many individual & family clients.


 Special Projects Research Manager. Conducted income and housing related research (Loan Outcome Evaluations, Hawaii Renters Study – 2013, see www.oha.org) pertaining to Native Hawaiians.


 Instructor, Assets High School. Instructed Health, PE, Chemistry, & Human Biology.


Director, Kalihi-Palama Health Center, WIC Program. Program Director WIC (Women, Infants and Children); 2800 clients/mo; Managed 8.0 FTE staff & ~$400K budget. Chief nutritionist for all high-risk clients, lead educator, evaluator and breastfeeding specialist.
1989-2000  State EFNEP Coordinator Instructor, U.H. at Manoa, Dept. of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences, Undergraduate Advising Coordinator (1998-2000); Taught Community and Lifespan Nutrition. Principal Investigator of various food security and nutrition program assistance research projects.
